Chile Customs Information

Customs Information

Please take a moment to review important customs information before shipping to Chile.

Personal Effects Customs Clearance Chile

Holiday baggage and other time sensitive packages should not be sent on this route.

Shipments must arrive in Chile within 120 days of the owner's arrival in the country to be eligible for personal effects clearance.

In order to clear personal effects into Chile, our courier partner will normally contact the consignee directly to request a copy of their passport.  An additional fee of $50 USD + VAT will also need to be settled for them to process clearance.

Should the declared value exceed $1,499 USD, the customer will need to arrange their own customs broker

Under no circumstances should a business or hotel name be used as the receiver’s name. The owner and named receiver of the goods should be the same person and is required to be in the country at the time of clearance.

Chilean customs will usually inspect all shipments resulting in a delay of around one week.

On this route, you are required to visit the destination country’s official customs website and make yourself aware of any requirements, processes or fees, which may be due based on your personal circumstances and what you are shipping.

Upon arrival in the destination, you agree to comply with any customs processes, provide the customs authority with any information they request and to discuss the clearance of the shipment directly with the customs authority or our delivery partner in the destination.

General Personal Effects Customs Information

Personal effects are typically defined as used items which have been in the sender's possession for 6 months or more. If your shipment is checked by  customs and is found to contain brand new or commercial items, you shipment may not be assessed as personal effects. Keep this in mind if you are sending Christmas gifts or other new items. Please check with customs so you are aware of potential customs duties, follow any advice given and attach all necessary documentation.

In order to demonstrate that your shipment consists of personal effects, you will be required to complete a brief non-generic packing list online, entries to be made in the format: "5 x Cotton Dresses, 2 x Jeans, 3 x Pair of Gloves", and so on, rather than as "10 x Used Clothing".

As customs processes and allowances vary by country, we advise all customers take 5 minutes to check how their personal circumstances and what they are sending will be assessed under the prevailing customs regulations of the destination.

More information is available on our customs information page.

About Chile

About Chile

Chile is situated in South America between the Andes mountain range and the Pacific Ocean. The currency used is the Chilean Peso and the official spoken language is Spanish, due to Spanish colonisation during the 16th century, which replaced the Inca rule. With its hugely ranging latitude crossing 38 degrees of the southern hemisphere, Chile has a very extreme range of climates, from freezing tundra and glaciers in the south to dry deserts in the north, and a range of subtropical to Mediterranean-like weather in the central regions.

As a hugely diverse country, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of things to do on a trip there. If you want to hit up the slopes somewhere a bit different, the Valle Nevado outside Santiago is the perfect place. Exciting heli-skiing is also on offer here for the daredevils among you.

The Atacama Desert is also particularly popular among tourists who head there with dirt bikes to explore the unusual landscape and geysers, such as El Tatio. The area also attracts a different set of people at night. Astronomers and stargazers flock to the desert ‒ particularly Valle de Elqui on clear nights ‒ to gaze at the skies using some of the world’s biggest and best telescopes.

Other exciting activities to participate in around the country include hiking or biking in the countryside or shopping in the plentiful malls around the capital city, Santiago.

Other Ways of Shipping to Chile

Other Ways of Shipping to Chile

As well as sending parcels, baggage and luggage to Chile you could look into the following alternatives for shipping items internationally, especially if you need to send large, bulky items like furniture.

Air Freight to Chile

If you have to send big items, such as a console table or ottoman, to Chile you could look into air freight. The time it takes to transport your items this way is usually one to two days, making it a quick service. It can be quite expensive, though, with costs increasing as your shipment size increases. You will likely also have to hire a customs agent to sort customs clearance for you. Another cost to think about is getting your items to and from the airport, which means the price of using air freight could quickly mount up. If you send internationally by air freight to Chile your items will likely arrive at Santiago, Chacalluta or Diego Aracena Airports.

Sea Freight and Container Shipping to Chile

Another option for shipping large bulky items is sea freight or container shipping. Sea freight shipping to Chile can take a number of weeks, so it’s a good option if you don’t need your items straight away. This option can be cheaper than air freight, but you will still need to pay for the services of a customs agent and will need to sort out how to get your items to and from the ports. This means the cost could be more than expected. When using container shipping to Chile, your items will most likely arrive by ship at one of the major sea ports, such as the Ports of Iquique, Valparaiso or Coronel.

Shipping Goods to Chile

You must research current customs rules when shipping goods to Chile. You should know about any duty that you need to pay and what items are permitted to be shipped to Chile, which items are restricted, and which are entirely prohibited. Take a look at the prohibited items and customs sections on this page for more information.
