Sandstone Universities in Australia
Wednesday, 7 Aug 2019
Sandstone universities, like the Group of Eight universities, are a group of the oldest and most prestigious academic establishments in Australia. Yet, they are given the name of Sandstone universities and you may have already guessed why – their sandstone buildings. The sandstone look also sets these universities apart from the Red Brick universities in the UK.
What are Sandstone Universities?
Aside from their prestigious status, their academic and research excellence, and their international student population, Sandstone universities have been ranked as the top 6 most beautiful universities in Australia by Times Higher Education. The University of Sydney, for example, is known for its Hogwarts-style building. The University of Queensland has a beautiful Brisbane backdrop, with the main campus being bordered by the Brisbane river. The University of Melbourne has an art building with designs by Vivienne Westwood. The University of Tasmania and the University of Western Australia are in different parts of Australia, but both are close to Aussie beaches and coastlines. The University of Adelaide is home to the oldest university building, which has intricate gothic architecture.
As well as beautiful architecture, Australia’s Sandstone universities can also boast academic excellence from both students and staff. They have each made the Times Higher Education world university rankings, with the University of Melbourne having the highest ranking, followed by the University of Sydney, and the University of Queensland. These, as well as the University of Adelaide and the University of Western Australia, are also part of the Group of Eight universities, which are known to be the best universities in the world for creating jobs, fuelling the economy, and bringing cultural diversity.
A big bonus of these universities is that they are all located in the cities that have been ranked as the best cities in Australia for living, studying, and working.
