Personal Effects Customs Clearance Slovenia
Holiday baggage and other time sensitive packages should not be sent on this route.
The volume of shipments sent to this destination across the last 12 weeks has not been sufficient to meet our minimum number of on time shipments required for holiday baggage approval.
Duty relief may only be granted to shipments considered as permanent imports for one year or more such as for relocation or study, where the relevant evidence is also provided.
Unlike most other countries, Slovenian customs do not always consider temporary imports of personal effects such as those for a holiday or business trip, or the import of goods by returning residents who have been outside of Slovenia for less than one year, as tax exempt, customs will assess shipments on a case by case basis. If Slovenian customs assesses that duty and taxes are due, these will need to be paid by the receiver directly to our courier partner in the Slovenia.
Shipments of Personal Effects will require a copy of the owner’s passport and a copy of their flight ticket to be uploaded to their Send My Bag account to demonstrate to customs that they have travelled or will be travelling to Slovenia from the country they are shipping from.
On this route, you are required to visit the destination country’s official customs website and make yourself aware of any requirements, processes or fees, which may be due based on your personal circumstances and what you are shipping.
Upon arrival in the destination, you agree to comply with any customs processes, provide the customs authority with any information they request and to discuss the clearance of the shipment directly with the customs authority or our delivery partner in the destination.
General Personal Effects Customs Information
Personal effects are typically defined as used items which have been in the sender's possession for 6 months or more. If your shipment is checked by customs and is found to contain brand new or commercial items, you shipment may not be assessed as personal effects. Keep this in mind if you are sending Christmas gifts or other new items. Please check with customs so you are aware of potential customs duties, follow any advice given and attach all necessary documentation.
In order to demonstrate that your shipment consists of personal effects, you will be required to complete a brief non-generic packing list online, entries to be made in the format: "5 x Cotton Dresses, 2 x Jeans, 3 x Pair of Gloves", and so on, rather than as "10 x Used Clothing".
As customs processes and allowances vary by country, we advise all customers take 5 minutes to check how their personal circumstances and what they are sending will be assessed under the prevailing customs regulations of the destination.
More information is available on our customs information page.
Customs Clearance Time
When a bag is stopped by customs for any reason (missing documentation, impromptu inspection, prohibited contents, commercial contents or further information required) Send My Bag records how long customs hold it for. Our historical statistics for this route indicate that if the customs authority stops your bag they will on average take 5 working days to process it and release it back to us for delivery.

About Slovenia
Slovenia is a Eurozone country in central Europe, neighbouring Austria, Italy, Hungary and Croatia. The country has a population of 2,055,000 and an area of 20,273 km2. The main language is Slovene, but Hungarian and Italian are also spoken in border regions. The country’s capital city is Ljubljana, which has a population of 280,000. Other urban areas include Maribor, Kranj, Celje and Koper.
Slovenia is one of the eight Alpine countries in Europe, but it also has a Mediterranean coast. The climate of Slovenia varies according to region, with the Alpine areas suffering a harsh climate but the coast enjoying a sub-Mediterranean climate. The average temperature is 20°C (68°F) in July and 0°C (32°F) in January.
The country is very green, given its vast areas of forest. It is the third most forested country in Europe. The country also contains 9,000 beautiful karstic caves.
You can reach Slovenia by air, with many connections between Ljubljana Airport and other European cities. There are also many rail connections.
Slovenia is a great destination for activity holidays. In the winter you can enjoy skiing in the Alps and in the summer there are plenty of opportunities for hiking, cycling and water sports. These include white-water rafting, canyoning and canoeing. For a gentler activity, angling is amply provided for by numerous rivers and lakes, and you can golf to your heart’s content at around 13 golf courses.
In the city of Ljubljana, there is plenty of architecture to view, plus shops and restaurants to enjoy, making it an ideal destination for a city break.

Air Freight to Slovenia
Air freight is one way to send big items like tables or chairs to Slovenia. You normally need to wait one to two days for your items to arrive, which makes it a quick, but at times expensive, option. How much you pay depends on your shipment’s weight and its size. You will probably also have to pay for a customs agent to deal with customs clearance for you. And, you need to transport your items to and from the airport. If you send internationally by air freight to Slovenia your items will likely arrive at one of the major airports. These are Ljubljana, Maribor and Portorož Airports.
Sea Freight and Container Shipping to Slovenia
You could instead choose sea freight or container shipping to transport your possessions to Slovenia. If you don’t need your items straightaway, this could be the solution for you, especially if you need to send something like a canoe or a snooker table. This option can be cheaper than air freight, but you will still need to hire a customs agent and will need to get your items to and from the ports. So, the cost could be more than expected. Your items will most likely arrive at the Port of Koper.
Shipping Goods to Slovenia
You need to be aware of the current Slovenian customs rules when shipping goods, as there will likely be customs duties that you need to pay. Plus, there will be some goods that you are not allowed to ship to Slovenia. Take a look at the prohibited items and customs sections on this page for more information.
